This overarched two subordinate themes: (a) Steps backward-encompassing those times when relatives hovered uncertainly, missed opportunities to engage due to advancing dementia, and felt regret and (b) Steps forward-encompassing moments of unexpected rewards, acceptance, self-forgiveness, and empathic connection with others on a similar journey.
